Seán McGinley and Seána Kerslake Announced for King of the Castle

We're delighted to announce that Seán McGinley and Seána Kerslake will play leading roles in our upcoming production of King of the Castle by Eugene McCabe, in Galway and Dublin this autumn. This is the first major revival of the production in over 30 years and sees Seán McGinley’s welcome return to Druid and our first time working with acclaimed actress, Seána Kerslake.

Seán, an integral company member since its foundation in Galway over 40 years ago, played memorable roles over the years in productions
including Waiting for Godot, Conversations on a Homecoming and Playboy of the Western World. Seána Kerslake will be familiar to many from RTÉ’s recent series, Can’t Cope, Won’t Cope and particularly for her stand out performance for the titular role in the IFTA-winning A Date for Mad Mary.

Séan McGinley plays Scober MacAdam. Scober is king of the castle, a once glorious Big House in County Leitrim with an extensive farm.  He has a young wife, Tressa, played by Seána Kerslake, but their marriage is childless and frustrated. When rumours threaten Scober’s pride, he concocts a plan that jeopardises all he has worked for.

King of the Castle is very much a play of its time but the central themes still resonate today, being steeped in a world of patriarchy and religion that invades the personal and the intimate’ says Artistic Director Garry Hynes. ‘Staging a play with deep-rooted issues, a big cast and a demanding setting is always a challenge, but it presents another great opportunity for us to undertake a project that is ambitious and provocative.’

Directed by Garry Hynes, the production features the award-winning design team from DruidShakespeare: Francis O’Connor (design), James F. Ingalls (lighting), Greg Clarke (sound) and David Bolger (movement).
