Druid announces the 2019 recipient of the Marie Mullen Bursary

Druid is delighted to announce Galway based designer, Clíodhna Hallissey as the recipient of the Marie Mullen Bursary, which was open to female theatre artists working in Ireland in the fields of design, directing and dramaturgy.

Now in its second year, the award is intended to address the historic imbalance of female representation in theatre and to support the professional development of women in Irish theatre. A selection panel of industry professionals determined a shortlist of applicants for interviews which took place in mid-June.

‘After an extremely successful inaugural year, we are delighted that the Marie Mullen Bursary continues to prosper’ said Artistic Director, Garry Hynes. ‘We were once again impressed by the quality and quantity of this year’s applicants. The talent and competence of the women we interviewed signals a bright future for Irish theatre. We were fortunate to have Eleanor White as part of the Druid team for the past year and wish her the best in future endeavours. We look forward to welcoming Clíodhna on board.’

‘It has been an honour and a delight working with Eleanor over the past year. I am excited to see this bursary continue to grow and look forward to supporting and working with Cliodhna over the coming year’ said Marie Mullen, Actor and Druid-co founder.

Clíodhna will come on board as Assistant Costume Designer for a major production in Druids 2019/2020 season. She will receive a stipend of €2,000 along with mentoring, and access to workshops on Druid’s other development programmes such as FUEL.

In response to the announcement, Clíodhna said ‘This bursary is a vital next step for me as a designer and an incredible opportunity for me to push myself and hone my skills alongside experienced designers that I admire. I can’t think of a better way for me to learn my craft than with a company whose hard working ethos and wide reaching vision, I have always respected.’
