On the Outside

Free educational resources for post-primary students that celebrate an extraordinary Galway writer, Tom Murphy

As part of the DruidGregory Community and Education programme in 2020, Druid delivered one-off, outdoor performances of Galway writer Tom Murphy’s first play, On the Outside at secondary schools in Galway city and county.

On the Outside (written with Noel O’Donoghue) is Tom Murphy's first play, in which began a lifetime of engagement with the idea of what it was to be Irish and live in 20th-century Ireland. Two townies, Joe and Frank, may be short a few bob to get into the country dancehall, but that won’t stop them trying. On the Outside is a satirical comedy about exclusion and trying to overcome social barriers in 1950s Ireland.

Our specially designed education pack provides further information for students and teachers to help examine the play.

Druid's Community and Education Programme is supported by Aerogen and the Adrian Brinkerhoff Poetry Foundation.
